A very rare 18th-century receipt for a collection taken from church property, dated January 7, 1794. Issued in Lublin for the parish in the town of Okrzeja in the Sandomierz Province for the amount of 265 zlotys, 27 groszy, and 9 denars.
Today’s village of Okrzeja (Lublin Province) lies on the Okrzejka River, which originates near Wola Okrzejska and flows westward, emptying into the Vistula River beyond Maciejowice. In the 15th century, Okrzeja was a town and belonged successively to Maciej Grot, the Samborzecki family, the Leśniowolski family, the Firlej family, and the Cieciszowski family. The local cemetery contains the grave of Henryk Sieniewicz’s mother.
The tax levied on ecclesiastical estates was established to increase the size of the standing army and amounted to one-twentieth of a grosz of the regular income from these estates.
A very well-preserved piece, on stiff paper with a visible portion of the watermark. Low serial number 18 with a handwritten signature.
We highly and strongly recommend this not only to collectors of paper currency from the Kościuszko Uprising period.
