Georges Spiro (Warsaw 1909 - Nice 1994) - self-taught painter, counted among the Surrealists. Born in Warsaw, he spent his youth years in Vienna, toiling as a writer and publishing a literary magazine. Arrested after the German occupation of Austria, he made his way to France with his family in 1942 and settled in Nice, which was part of the unoccupied part of the country. He made a living by making toys, and in his spare time took up painting. At the end of the war he served in the French army, his wife died in a concentration camp, while his brother - a survivor of the Buchenwald camp - made his way to England. He joined him in London, where he exhibited his paintings at L'Arcade Gallery in 1946. The exhibition was a great success, with most of the works sold. Two years later he returned to France and devoted himself entirely to painting. In 1948, he was awarded the Prix Muratore at L'Exposition de la Jeune Peinture. His paintings, held in the convention of surrealism, have taken part in many exhibitions in France and abroad (including Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and the USA). They are in the collections of numerous museums and private collections.
