Polish versatile artist: painter, graphic artist, stage designer, and co-founder of the cult
weekly magazine "Przekrój." His artistic education began at the Cracow Academy of Arts
Fine Arts, where he studied from 1928-1934, during which time he studied under the guidance of
outstanding professors: Władysław Jarocki, Fryderyk Pautsch and Wojciech Weiss. It was
Weiss was the one who particularly influenced his later graphic work. After graduating from the
Academy of Fine Arts, he continued his studies in Paris (1935-1936), where he came into contact with the avant-garde currents of
European art. There he perfected his distinctive style, combining synthetic form with
ironic humor. From 1937 to 1939 he worked as a stage designer at the Polish Theater in
Warsaw, which further enriched his workshop with spatial experience and the ability to
visual synthesis.
Marian Eile's style in painting is distinguished by freedom, a sense of humor and a penchant for
pastiche and irony. His works often balanced on the border between high art and pop culture, which
was in line with his general artistic philosophy - to cross the rigid boundaries between
mass and elite culture. In his paintings one can see the influence of Surrealism, Dadaism, as well as the
inspirations of naïve art, comics and advertising.
Eile used a characteristic, somewhat "careless" line, skillfully handling color and
composition to create works full of ironic social and cultural commentary.
