Biography
He divided his life between Warsaw and his home near Kazimierz. Nature and the landscape were his natural environment and inspiration. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, having previously graduated from the University of Technology. His work is the result of keen observation of selected motifs from his surroundings, often repeated: closed gates, roads, hills, ravines, water, and boats floating on its surface or dogs wading in it. Since 1984, he has collaborated with the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw. His works have been presented in numerous solo exhibitions, including at: the Foksal Gallery, the BWA Gallery in Lublin, the Awangarda Gallery in Wrocław, the State Art Gallery in Sopot, Gallery 86 in Łódź, the Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw, the Soho Center for Visual Arts in New York, and Galerie Ucher in Cologne. He participated in numerous group exhibitions. In 1999, he won the Grand Prix at the International Drawing Competition in Wrocław. He was a fellow of the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York; the Soros Foundation in the U.S., and the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy. Recently, he battled illness and painted less. In 2009, he was honored with the 2008 Jan Cybis Award, presented to outstanding painters by the Association of Polish Artists and Designers for his lifetime achievement.
