Biography
Władysław Trebunia-Tutka was born in Poronin in a family
with musical and pastoral traditions. He was a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He practiced easel painting and painting on glass (among others in the collection of the Tatra Museum). He also designed stained glass and textiles. His sacred compositions, frescoes and stained glass can be found in churches throughout Podhale. His polychromes, meanwhile, can be found in many restaurants and inns in Podhale and in private homes.
Wladyslaw Trebunia-Tutka is considered an artist of great authority for several generations of highlanders. Already as a teenage boy he led his older brothers' band, winning the Second Prize in the Podhale Musicians' Competition in 1955 and an individual prize at the World Youth Festival in Warsaw. He also won the highest laurels in the field of traditional music, receiving the Grand Prize, "Baszta" at the 1991 Kazimierz Dolny Festival with the Trebuni-Tutek Family Band. His recordings are in the archives of Polish Radio and the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Until 2005, he toured with the Trebunie-Tutki band, founded and led by his son, Krzysztof. The group has evolved from a highlander band to a band performing at the largest World Music festivals in Europe, Asia and North America.
Władysław Trebunia-Tutka, a member of the Union of Polish Artists and an honorary member of the Podhale Association, has been honored with many badges and medals for his artistic work. In 1978 he received the Minister of Culture Award, and in 1997 the St. Witkiewicz Award. In 2009, he received the Oscar Kolberg Award and a silver medal - Meritorious to Culture GLORIA ARTIS.
