A Russian Orthodox Icon, 19th Century. Saints Adrian of Poshekhonye and Leonid with the Dormition of the Mother of God"

Tempera on wood panel

This substantial wood panel icon is a complex hagiographical work, likely commissioned for a monastery or a significant private chapel. The composition is divided into several narrative and devotional areas. On the right, three full-length figures are led by Saint Adrian of Poshekhonye and Saint Leonid, shown in monastic robes with golden halos.
In the upper left, an inset scene depicts the Dormition of the Mother of God, where Christ appears above the Virgin’s funeral bier to receive her soul. The lower half of the icon features a detailed architectural rendering of a white-walled monastery with green and gold cupolas, set against a dark landscape with fishermen. The icon is notable for its large scale and the sophisticated integration of landscape and architecture into a sacred narrative. Tempera and oil on wood panel. 70.5 x 60 cm
