Oil on copper
This remarkable 17th-century Flemish cabinet painting is attributed to Frans Francken the Younger, the most celebrated member of the Francken dynasty in Antwerp. The scene depicts the "Adoration of the Magi" with the sophisticated narrative flair and vibrant, "jewel-like" palette that defined Francken’s prestigious output. The composition centers on the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, receiving the devotion and precious offerings of the three Kings.
The work showcases the artist’s mastery of small-scale figurative painting, particularly evident in the meticulous rendering of the Magi’s luxurious vestments. Balthazar is portrayed with exceptional detail, wearing an elaborate feathered turban and a finely draped white mantle, reflecting the Flemish Baroque fascination with exoticism. The use of a rich, saturated red for Melchior’s cloak and the warm golden tones of Caspar’s robes create a rhythmic color harmony typical of Francken’s best-known works.
The architectural background, featuring classical ruins under a soft atmospheric sky, adds a sense of depth and timelessness to this sacred event. This panel is a significant example of the refined, intellectual art produced for the elite "Konstkamers" (art cabinets) of 17th-century Antwerp. Oil on panel, 25.5 x 19.7cm
