Johann Georg Hettinger, Johann Georg Hettinger. King David in Penitence

Oil on Canvas

This grand-scale composition by the 18th-century master Johann Georg Hettinger is a tour de force of Baroque drama and spiritual fervor. It depicts King David in a moment of profound religious ecstasy and repentance, his gaze directed toward the heavens where divine light breaks through the clouds. Hettinger masterfully integrates the king’s dual identity: his regal status is conveyed through the heavy, ermine-trimmed robes and the crown resting on the plinth to the left, while his role as the "Sweet Psalmist of Israel" is represented by the prominent harp and open book of Psalms at his feet. In the background, a subtle narrative detail—the figure of Bathsheba at her bath—provides the theological context for David's penitence. The work is characterized by its fluid, expressive brushwork and a rich, warm palette that animates the voluminous drapery. The diagonal tension of David's outstretched arms and the sophisticated use of chiaroscuro reflect the influence of the South German and Austrian Baroque traditions, making this a significant and highly decorative addition to any collection of Old Master paintings.
