Biography
Magdalena Abakanowicz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1950 to 1954. She worked as a sculptor. The first works that brought her international fame were the monumental, three-dimensional tapestries with a relief texture known as “Abakany.” The artist’s sculptures are created using a variety of techniques and materials—ceramics, wood, bronze, and plastic—and include both figurative and non-figurative works. She has designed and executed numerous projects for public spaces and museums. From 1965 to 1990, she taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań. She is the author of scholarly essays on art, mythology, and religion. In 1965, she received the Grand Prix award at the São Paulo Biennial. She is regarded by international critics as one of the foremost artists of the 20th century.
