The sculpture is a typical example of the artist’s style. Igor Mitoraj was an artist whose work transcended him—monumental, recognizable worldwide, yet deeply rooted in a reflection on the fragility of the human body and the transience of life. His sculptures, inspired by antiquity and deliberately “mutilated,” cracked, or fragmentary, have become one of the most distinctive languages of 20th- and 21st-century sculpture. Prof. Czesław Dźwiga described him as follows: “Mitoraj was a very gentle, reserved, even withdrawn man […] Mitoraj’s ‘acting’ was his sculpture, which spoke for him. He was a very modest man. I would call him a walking shadow, despite his fame.”
