Cast bronze, patinated, height 72 cm, plinth dimensions 20 x 32 x 4 cm, Germany, after 1877, R.Bellair & Co. foundry, Berlin, Friedrichstrasse 182
Elegant cabinet bronze, presenting in reduced scale a Parisian marble sculpture discovered by German archaeologists in 1877 at the temple of Hera in Olympia. It depicts a figure of Hermes holding a baby Dionysus; the work, created in the 4th century BC, is attributed to Praxiteles. The presented reduction depicts the statue with an arm missing (in his hand he held a bunch of grapes) and a fragment of the figure of Dionysus - as in the archaeological find. In later years, the fragments of the figure of Dionysus were combined and the missing elements were reconstructed, and so the sculpture is on display today at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.
