  • About the author: 1 ) Jan Bułhak (October 18, 1876, Ostaszyn, Nowogródek County/Nowogródek – February 4, 1950, Giżycko), an outstanding Polish photographer, photography theorist, and lecturer at the Faculty of Arts of Stefan Batory University (SBU) in Vilnius (1919–1939), where he headed the Department of Art Photography; the most prominent Polish creator of landscape photography, pictorialist, and author and promoter of “native photography.” He began photographing in 1905, made his debut in the press in 1908, and shortly thereafter participated in his first exhibition; he studied photography and aesthetics during artistic travels across Europe and during an apprenticeship in 1912 in Dresden under Professor Hugo Erfurth. From 1912, he had his own private photography studio and worked as a professional photographer in Vilnius. Founder of the Vilnius Photo Club (1927) and co-founder of the Polish Photo Club (1929), as well as the Association of Polish Art Photographers in 1946 (also an honorary member and the first president of ZPAF). Author of numerous photo albums as well as textbooks and photography guides; see Fotografowie 1946–2006, pp. 54–55, Piwowarski 216, pp. 94–101. 2) Janusz Bułhak (April 27, 1906, Peresieka, Borysów County, Belarus – May 15, 1976, Warsaw), photographer and composer. The son and student of Jan Bułhak, he developed an independent interest in photography in 1933 when he joined the Vilnius Photo Club and from that time participated in numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad until 1939. He graduated from the Composition Department of the Vilnius Music Conservatory in 1938. During the war, he worked as a portrait photographer at his father’s studio in Vilnius. After the war, together with his father, he primarily documented the destruction of Warsaw and the Recovered Territories in photographs between 1945 and 1950. In 1946, he was a co-founder of the Association of Polish Art Photographers (ZPAF) (Warsaw District of ZPAF). He was actively involved in photography until 1958, after which he devoted himself to music. His photographic work focused on landscapes in the pictorialist style and the idea of “native photography” promoted by his father; he took portraits and genre scenes less frequently; see Photographers 1946–2006, p. 56, and other materials
