A need for a rupture to reconnect those parts that make us up as human beings and as a community. A social urgency. A political vision. These are the raisons d'être of Asebeia, a photographic project consisting of a series of chapters, each part of an ongoing research.
The subjects chosen by Ornella Mercier are ordinary people. They bring with them their own history, their own reality and their own experiences. It is behind them that the genesis of these photographs lies, behind their uniqueness and peculiarity, brought out through a series of questions from which Mercier creates the imagery behind each individual shot. The person portrayed is not reduced to a model through which to express the artist's vision, but becomes a drive, an inspiration or a concept.
The body is the medium through which we impose our presence, it carries our being and our human and cultural baggage. The profound knowledge of our material part makes us free, aware, able to confront ourselves with the outside world and to choose our path.
The photographs stand as a means of reclaiming, without asking permission, our sexual and physical freedom. A means of proclaiming dissimilarity in all its nuances and destroying the roots of imposed hegemonic stereotypes. The body becomes a temple of vindication where we pray for a new flourishing.
