Amedeo Modigliani (b. 1884 in Livorno, d. 1920 in Paris)—an Italian painter and sculptor associated with the Parisian École de Paris. He is best known for his portraits and nudes, recognizable for their elongated proportions, simplified lines, and monumental, synthetic form. His work—though often underappreciated during his lifetime—became one of the symbols of 20th-century modern portraiture.
