Biography
From 1952 to 1957, he studied sculpture under Antoni Kenar in Zakopane. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the Department of Sculpture in Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz’s studio. He was a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, where he headed the Department of Sculpture; he also led a sculpture studio at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań. Since 1973, he has been creating works he calls “Składaki,” consisting of minimalist forms connected by hinges that, when unfolded, take on a three-dimensional shape. This approach led to the creation, beginning in 1975, of spatial drawings, stoneware reliefs, and the series *Ukryty wymiar* (*Hidden Dimension*)—works consisting of forms cut from translucent paper, often supplemented with lines. A further consequence of this way of thinking is the *Kalki* series—torn and cut, folded repeatedly—which engage in a kind of interplay with three-dimensional space. For the artist, space is yet another material to be shaped, an integral part of his artistic practice.
