The featured work is one of 80 numbered prints created on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition "CROSSOVER/S" at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan. "Holding the Horizon" alludes to the video accompanying the exhibition, in which an infinitely shifting golden line cuts through black, serving as a metaphor for light and darkness, time and memory. This edition transfers the key motif of the film - the horizontal axis of the "horizon", which is a sign and existential challenge - into graphic form. The austere, minimalist visual language of the work remains consistent with Bałka's aesthetics, while opening it up to new interpretations.
Mirosław Bałka (born 1958) - one of the most prominent contemporary Polish artists, sculptor, author of installations and videos. Graduate and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He began his career with figurative sculpture in the New Expressionist movement of the 1980s, to develop a minimalist language of art since the 1990s, based on reduction of form, use of raw materials (ash, steel, soap, salt) and deep reflection on corporeality, memory and trauma, especially the Holocaust experience. His work has been shown at the Tate Modern (London), the Venice Biennale, documenta in Kassel and the Pirelli HangarBicocca (Milan), among others. Represented by Galerie Nordenhake (Berlin/Stockholm). Lives and works in Otwock.
