Franciszek SIEDLECKI

Prominent Polish painter and printmaker representing the Symbolist trend. Having received a legal education at the Jagiellonian University, he took up art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1893. He continued his studies from 1894 at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. In 1898-1901 he stayed in Rome. From 1903 he lived in Warsaw. He collaborated as an illustrator with the magazine "Chimera". In 1910, he took charge of the graphic design of the monthly magazine "Sphinx"; in 1911, he became artistic director of the magazine "Sztuka". During World War I, he stayed in Dornach near Basel, where he deepened his knowledge of the principles of Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy; he also headed the workshop of stained glass designed for the "Goetheanum." In 1919 he settled in Warsaw, where he co-organized the Association of Polish Graphic Artists. From 1930 he published the magazine "Grafika". He participated in many international exhibitions. In 1928, the artist held a solo exhibition in Warsaw. Talented in many fields, he practiced painting, original and illustrative graphics, and stage design. He was involved in literary activities and was one of the influential art critics. His style is compared with the art of such great symbolists as Odillon Redon and Mikhail Vrubel. The offered painting perfectly demonstrates this affinity.
