Otto PIPPEL [1878-1960 Planegg].
Son of weaver Edward Pippel, brother of Alfred and Edward - Lodz photographers, owners of Moderne Foto. Otto was born on February 10, 1878, in Lodz, where he lived until the age of 18. He began his painting studies at the Kunstschule in Strasbourg under Anton Seder, and continued in Karlsruhe (in the studios of Friedrich Fehr and Julius H. Bergmann) and Dresden under Gotthardt Kuehl, and in Paris. After his studies, he settled in Planegg, near Munich, but in 1903-1908 he lived for a while in Lodz, where several exhibitions of his works were held. He traveled in France, Italy and Russia, but gained his greatest fame in Germany, where his landscapes were appreciated above all. His landscapes from Germany, France and Poland are maintained in an impressionistic manner, suffused with light and color. He exhibited extensively in German galleries, including a 1923 Impressionist exhibition at Munich's Brakel Gallery. At the end of World War II, he moved to Germany, settling in Planegg near Munich. Counted among the four "aces of the Munich school," the artist became a singer of nature, the author of numerous alpine landscapes. His legacy also includes portraits, genre scenes of beer gardens, hunting and interiors. After settling in Germany, he also accepted commissions for copies of old masters.
He died in 1960, in Munich.
