Author’s biography
Marcin Smarzewski (1788–1866) was a Polish landowner, diarist, and participant in the Napoleonic Wars. He took part in the Russian campaign of 1812 and the events of the November Uprising. He left behind memoirs that serve as a valuable testimony to the life of the Polish nobility and the political realities of the first half of the 19th century.
About the book
The memoir covers the years 1809–1831 and presents the events of the Napoleonic era and the period of the Kingdom of Poland as seen through the eyes of a participant and witness to history. The author describes military campaigns, the social and cultural life of the landed gentry, as well as the political atmosphere leading up to the outbreak of the November Uprising.
