A beautifully illustrated original edition of the history of ancient Rome from its foundation to the reign of Constantine the Great. Author Claude-François-Xavier Millot (1726-1785), was a French clergyman, writer and historian. The in-4to format work has a frontispiece and 48 full-page engravings depicting events in the history of ancient Rome. All the plates are signed by the most distinguished painters and engravers of 18th century France, Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724-1780), Charles Eisen (1720-1778), Benjamin Bolomey (1739-1819), Nicolas Ransonnette (1745-1810), and Hubert Gravelot (1699-1773). The 3 copperplate engravings out of a total of 49 are double-folded and larger than the book format. They depict a naval battle from the First Punic War, the triumph of Julius Caesar during the First Triumvirate, and the palace of Emperor Nero.
