"While looking for stósowne items for the edition, I received a message about a manuscript that by all means seemed worthy of publication. It was the work of the late Professor Marcin Piwocki, containing a translation of the Latin Chronicle of the city of Lviv by X. Canon J. Tomasz Józefowicz. The original work itself, never published in print and only preserved in a small number of exemplars, has long aroused the attention of scholars and the curiosity of the general public. The translator is already known for the merit he has rendered, according to his strength, by translating also the respectable Annuals of Lviv by Bartholomew Zimmorovich, published in Lviv in 1835. These two considerations spoke strongly in favor of the circulation of the manuscript lying for a dozen years without any use. Not being able to publish the original Latin, for which the general reading public would have to remain indifferent; not being able to enter into the duties of authorship and correct the manuscripts I publish the useful work of the late Professor Piwockiogo in the form and volume in which the translator left it, and in which I acquired it from his family. Whoever, however, rightly considers the significant number of new facts and details added in this book to the history of the city and archbishopric of Lviv, and indeed to the history of the entire Red Ruthenia and the Polish Church, will gloomily acknowledge that the good intentions of the publisher in putting it into print have not been fruitless."[Publisher]
A History of the City of Lviv in the 17th Century, written by Father Jan Tomasz Józefowicz (1662-1728), who came from an Armenian family of Catholic clergy, canon and custodian of the Lviv chapter, royalsecretary and historian. The study was initiated by Archbishop Konstantin Joseph Zielinski, who encouraged the author to describe the city's recent history. Preparing the chronicle for the years 1614-1700, the author relied in his work on rich source material, in which city, parish and monastery archives were used. Rare.
