Władysław TATARKIEWICZ
ON HAPPINESS
2nd ed. Kraków 1949, Wiedza-Zawód-Kultura. Tadeusz Zapiór, p. 483, [1], format 16x22 cm
Władysław Tatarkiewicz (1886–1980) was one of the most important Polish philosophers of the 20th century, a historian of philosophy and aesthetics, associated primarily with the University of Warsaw. His body of work includes fundamental studies in the history of philosophy, aesthetics, and the theory of values, which shaped postwar Polish humanities. Of particular significance were his syntheses of the history of philosophy and his reflections on the concepts of the good, beauty, and happiness, which remain points of reference in the humanities to this day.
“On Happiness” is one of Tatarkiewicz’s best-known works, offering a philosophical analysis of the concept of happiness in the history of European thought. In it, the author surveys various concepts of happiness—from antiquity, through Christianity, to the modern era—combining historical erudition with clear, systematic reflection. The second edition from 1949, published in the “Knowledge–Profession–Culture” series by Tadeusz Zapiór, is a postwar edition that popularized the work among a wide readership while preserving its scholarly character.
