Biography
He graduated from the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Since 1968, he has exhibited his works, including in New York. Most of his paintings are composed of rhombuses and rectangles. In the late 1960s, the artist gave his geometric compositions a three-dimensional quality; when affixed to surfaces, they form reliefs. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków at the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts in Adam Marczyński’s studio. He received his diploma with honors in 1967. He was a full professor at his alma mater. He has had twenty solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad; he has participated in over one hundred group exhibitions representing the geometric abstraction movement. Janusz Orbitowski’s primary areas of interest are space, light, movement, and their interrelationships. Since 1970, relief has been an important medium of expression for the painter. Janusz Orbitowski’s paintings are held in the collections of the National Museum in Kraków, Warsaw, Gdańsk, and Wrocław; the Museum of Art in Łódź; and numerous private collections in Poland, France, Sweden, Germany, and the United States. In 2020, the Starmach Gallery hosted a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work, featuring, among other things, his most famous white reliefs.
