Michel Kikoïne (1892-1968) was an outstanding painter whose work was inextricably intertwined with the fate of the famous Paris School(École de Paris). He began his artistic education in Minsk, at the private school of Yakub Kruger, where he formed a friendship with Chaim Soutin that lasted for years. The two artists continued their studies together from 1908 to 1911 at the Vilna Drawing School, eventually moving to Paris in 1913.
There, Kikoïne honed his craft at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts under Ferdinand Cormon.
His works quickly gained recognition and became the object of interest of Parisian art dealers, and were held in particular esteem by collectors such as Léon Zamaron and Eugène Descaves. The artist was a regular participant in exhibition life - from 1912 he presented his works in Parisian salons, and in later years took part in group exhibitions in Geneva, New York, Chicago and Warsaw. On the formal level, Kikoïne's work evolved from early landscapes maintained in bright, luminous tones to mature, expressive portraits, still lifes and atmospheric genre scenes.
