The Hungarian artist lived as a landscape painter in Bavaria. The picture shows Lake Uri, part of Lake Lucerne. Somogyi combines the size of the alpine nature with the idyll of the small shepherd scene in the foreground on the left. A steamer is sailing in the distance on the lake. The broad snow-capped mountain in the background is the Uri Rotstock. Views of Lake Lucerne were very popular in the 19th century. In particular, many artists chose the view over Lake Uri, including Alexander Calame in the middle of the century.
