Dutch painter 17th century, The Card Players

This Dutch artist's tavern scenes focus on characters playing games of chance. The general mood in this example is calm although the hand gestures of the characters create a tense moment. Perhaps the stake is sausages. The bottle of alcohol on the table alludes to the vanity of activities. The interior reflects the poor social level of the protagonists, note the table made from a barrel and a wooden plank, a sorghum broom on the floor. On the right, two curious characters participate in the scene: they are two passing pilgrims curious about the game.
