Lot information
Views of Prague and Cheb from "Civitates orbis terrarium". Editor Georg Braun, Cologne. Franz Hogenberg, an important Flemish engraver and cartographer, created these colored engravings of Prague and Cheb, which are part of the extensive cycle of city views "Civitates Orbis Terrarum". This cycle, published for the first time in the years 1572-1618, represents one of the most important city atlases from the early modern period. Hogenberg's works stand out not only for their accuracy, but also for their aesthetic quality, with his engravings being detailed views of major European cities. Colored engravings of Prague and Cheb are rare historical documents that capture the cities in their original form, including fortifications, churches and characteristic urban structures. These views are a valuable testimony of the urban development of Czech cities in the 16th century and at the same time an example of the art of early cartography.
