Dimensions 65 × 73 cm, Oil on canvas
The painting represents a hitherto unidentified scene taken from history, or from a contemporary epic. The king fell from his golden chariot; the crown falls to the ground. The hurrying page and the soldier bending over the king grab each other's noses. Small snakes can be seen around the king's body; one comes out of the mouth. They can be a sign of poisoning, enchantment, or a contagious plague. To the right, two horsemen in turbans bow to the fallen king; a white-bearded old man who occupies a high position at court, and a black man. The original scene is portrayed with confidence and the characters are aptly portrayed. The unknown master is from the Genoese school, as shown by the types of figures and the atmospheric light and color treatment.
