WORK DESCRIPTION:
Jan Styka is known primarily as the author of panoramas, although he also painted paintings on small formats. The featured work belongs to a trend close to academism, in which the artist depicted genre scenes with a visible interest in costume aspects. In the painting, Jan Styka depicted two candle-holding Orthodox priests in richly embroidered robes and black cloaks, with the interior of an Orthodox church and the outline of a third figure visible in the background. The gaze of one of the priests meets the gaze of the viewer. The warm colors and sketchy way of painting convey the serious mood of the ritual going on in the temple, allow the viewer to smell the burning candles and hear the noise of moving heavy robes.
