The painting’s colouration already reveals the painter’s affiliation to the group that excelled in “monochromatic still life painting”. From the 1630s onwards, these included above all Pieter Claesz (1596/98-1660) and Willem Claesz Heda (1594-1680/82). The arrangements in these still lifes are always extremely elegant and limited to a few objects with iconographic significance.
