Sitting on a chair next to a piano in an interior room, an elegantly dressed man with a full beard and glasses gazes intently out of the picture with his dark eyes. He is holding a quill pen in his right hand and is probably composing, as indicated by the sheet music on the piano. One of these bears the date 1856. He has placed his left arm over the back of the chair and, with his hand half open, he appears to be feeding a white dog sitting on a red armchair, partly covered with a green cloth. In the background, a bookshelf slightly concealed by a curtain on the right, in which a book is labeled "chant" (= to sing). Representative depiction of a composer. (1410604) (18)
