Dimensions 50 x 64 cm, Oil on canvas
A basket shown close-up contains various fruits, apples, peaches, pumpkins and blue and green grapes. A branch with peaches and stalks of cut grapes stands out decoratively on a dark background. The painting style is very delicate and painterly, the fruits stand out three-dimensionally and look very natural and alive. According to his own statement, Peter van Boucle was a student of Frans Snijders. His painting is clearly influenced by him. The fruit basket still life type was invented by Caravaggio with his famous painting of 1595/1596. Frans Snijders saw it in 1608–1609 during his stay with Cardinal Federico Borromeo in the collection of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, and then also painted a still life with fruit baskets in Antwerp. Unlike Caravaggio's paintings, however, Flemish fruit baskets are usually placed against a dark background. Fred Meijer's Expertise. Dimensions 50 x 64 cm, Oil on canvas
