Biography
In 1924, he began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, studying under Władysław Jarocki, Wojciech Weiss, and Fryderyk Pautsch. After graduating in 1930, he left for Paris on a one-year scholarship. Upon his return, starting in 1932, he worked as a set designer for theaters in Warsaw, Łódź (including the “Kameralny” Theater, during the 1937–1938 season, he designed the set for G. Zapolska’s play *Kobieta bez skazy* [A Woman Without a Flaw], directed by Wład. Krasnowiecki), Kraków, and Lviv, often collaborating with Leon Schiller. After the outbreak of the war, he was sent to the Warsaw Ghetto, from which he managed to escape. Following the fall of the Warsaw Uprising, in which he took part, he was sent to Stalag XI-A Altengrabow and remained there until the end of World War II. Upon his return to Poland, he began working at the Polish Army Theater in Łódź; in 1949, he moved to Warsaw and began collaborating with the Polish Theater. From 1947 to 1952, he was a lecturer at the State Higher School of Theater in Łódź; beginning in 1959, he created set designs for television. In 1973, he ended his work for the Polish Theater and focused on painting and graphic art. In 1979, he was honored with the title of Distinguished Member of the Union of Polish Stage Artists.
