signed, dated and described on the back: YOLANTA NIKT | MARTWA NATURKA "UNLIKE THE UNIQUE" | 2019 | OLEJ NA FLATNIE | 60 x 70
She studied painting at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Wroclaw (now the Academy of Fine Arts). She received her diploma in the studio of Prof. Jozef Halas in 1988.The artist says about her work: "I paint autobiographical themes, self-portraits with other painters, dresses, or so-called "Still lifes." I also like to create collages on paper. Sometimes I write poems... I have long been fascinated by folk and primitive art (glass painting, sculpture). It is an inspiration for me. I look for a simplified painting language in my works. Sign... Color...I also place texts on my canvases so that words can indicate elements that are absent from the painting, such as the direction of the wind.... I adopt the pseudonym NIKT in 1987, sending a painting to the National Competition of Art Schools "Landscape" of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. I win an award there and stay permanently with this pseudonym. I live with the painter and it smells of turpentine all around..."
The featured painting betrays affinities with Matisse's Fauvist still lifes. Far from realism, the use of color, the "suspension" of objects in a blue, undefined space, makes us see ordinary objects as "extraordinary ordinariness."
