This splendid painting, the work of a French painter of the Francois Boucher school
(Paris, 1703 - 1770), depicts a riot of the canons of the Rococo period, the most delicate, light
and at the same time exuberant of styles.
The composition is probably derived from another canvas by Boucher, and stages a cheerful
theater of five cupids who accompany each other in their rest after a hunt with bow
and arrows, immersed in a verdant landscape on the edge of a forest. One of them is intent on
tying the bird to the trunk of a tree, while two companions feed the dog with joy. On the
right, in front of a rabbit lying on the ground, a thirsty cupid guzzles from a water
bottle while another observes him, drawing his attention to drink in turn. A fascinating
glimpse of a landscape opens up against the background of the composition.
Predominant, is the feeling of gracefulness that the scene offers, emphasized by the graceful
poses of the little angels and the masterful use of the palette. The colors are clear and
bright, with a beautiful play of chiaroscuro.
Francois Boucher and his workshop dedicated a large part of their activity to this type of
subject, a symbol par excellence of the frivolous pleasures of life to which the aristocratic
class aspired, thanks to the great fame of the master and the copious requests from collectors.
Our work is signed and dated "F. Boucher 1753"
The work is in excellent condition, completed with a beautiful carved frame in gilded wood.
