Russia and Sweden fought the Great Northern War (1700 - 1721). A decisive moment was the Battle of Poltava (1709), in which the Russian army defeated the Swedes. As Sweden also had a strong fleet, this had to be destroyed by Russia beforehand at great cost in order to achieve complete victory. Russian Tsar Peter the First spent many years rebuilding the Russian navy from scratch and reaped the fruits of his labour at the Battle of Hanko on the Hanko Peninsula in 1714. Almost two dozen Russian galleys attacked the Swedish fleet of more than a dozen ships. Oil on canvas, 41 x 56 cm.
