Belgian painter and sculptor. Born into a family with artistic traditions, his father Barthélemy (1759-1840) was a sculptor and his brother Charles-Louis (1802-1889) a marine painter. He studied from 1816-1818 at the Ghent Academy, and from 1818 was a pupil of Balthasar Ommegack. He traveled extensively, visiting France (1824 and 1841), Germany (1828), Italy (1841), and was in London twice (1824 and 1826). In 1827 he settled permanently in Brussels, where he set up a studio; in 1830 he actively participated in the anti-Dutch uprising. He is known mainly for his naturalistic depictions of animals, incorporated into vast landscapes. Animals were depicted in their natural habitat, in stables or in pastures. Clearly inspired by the works of 17th-century masters such as Potter and Cuyp, his works are characterized by photographic accuracy and refined perspective. He has enjoyed considerable artistic and financial success, and was a member of academies in Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, St. Petersburg and Amsterdam. He was honored with the French Legion of Honor, the Prussian Iron Cross and the Belgian Order of Leopold, among others.
