Władysław Bakałowicz (Chrzanów 1833–1904 Paris), genre painter and portraitist. From 1846 to 1852, he studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. In 1863, he moved to Paris, where he gained popularity painting small works, mostly figures in 16th- and 17th-century costumes, particularly scenes from the life of the French court during the reign of Henry II of Valois. He later obtained French citizenship and adopted the surname Ladislav Bakalowicz. Initially, he painted pastel portraits; later, he turned to historical and genre painting. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salons. He also exhibited his art in Brussels, Berlin, Vienna, London, and New York; in Poland: in Warsaw, Kraków, and Lviv. His wife was the actress Wiktoryna Józefa Bakałowicz, with whom he had a son, Stefan, who also became a painter.
