Through the use of light and its intensity in the appropriate places, the artist directs the viewer's attention and emphasizes the emotional dilemmas of the portrait's subject. A bright stream of light is directed at the face, which shows fatigue, apparent tranquility, but at the same time obstinacy, tenacity in the face of the hardships of fate. The dark surroundings of the townswoman compose with mourning attire, black is not only her attire, but also the surroundings after the loss of a loved one.
