Ryszard Okniński attended the Warsaw Drawing Class run by Wojciech Gerson, from which he graduated in 1878 and went to Munich, where he studied for two years at the Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Seitz and Alexander von Wagner. From 1881 he lived in Lublin, and from 1886 in Warsaw. He died in 1925 and is buried in the parish cemetery in Gozdowo. A year after the artist's death, a solo posthumous exhibition took place at Zachęta. Much of the work in the possession of the artist's daughter was destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising.
