Signed, dated, and inscribed lower right: LESZEK STAŃKO / ZAKOPANE / 78
An intimate Tatra landscape depicting a wooden mountain cabin nestled among rocks and alpine vegetation, set against a backdrop of blue-gray mountain ranges. The composition is rendered in the luminous color palette characteristic of Leszek Stańko, with a distinct predominance of cool blues, greens, and grays, broken up by accents of pink, purple, and warm browns.
The painting is executed in a free style, with a distinct paint texture and energetic brushwork. The artist does not construct the landscape photographically but synthesizes it into a painterly impression: the hut, boulders, vegetation, and mountain ranges form a cohesive, rhythmic structure of color and light. Particularly striking is the contrast between the heavy, wooden mass of the hut and the soft, misty mountains in the background.
The work dates from 1978, that is, from the mature period of Stańko’s career, when the Tatra landscape was among his most recognizable motifs. Similar depictions of Zakopane, mountain pastures, huts, and mountain vistas are particularly prized on the collectors’ market.
