Victor Vasarely - artist of Hungarian origin who created and worked in France until his death. One of the leading representatives of geometric abstraction. Considered a precursor and representative of the op-art movement. He created by composing arrangements, using geometric shapes (the most characteristic are cube-shaped compositions). He created the illusion of spatial depth on two-dimensional surfaces, using only abstract color patches. Originally, his works were dominated by black and white colors, which he greatly diversified in his later work.
Beginning in 1955, he created series of "optical-kinetic" paintings that give the impression of pulsating, rippling, swirling or flickering. Since 1960, the artist developed the concept of a visual alphabet entitled "Planetary Folklore" in his theoretical manifestos.
"Pillango," meaning "butterfly" in Hungarian, is an example of his distinctive style, which combines abstract geometry with optical illusion to create dynamic and pulsating visual effects. The work "Pillango" was created around1971. "Pillango" is notable for its use of geometric shapes and colors to create the illusion of three-dimensionality and movement on a flat surface. Vasarely was able to masterfully manipulate the viewer's perception, which makes his works extremely unique and recognizable.
Vasarely's works are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. A permanent exhibition of this artist's works is at the Vasarely Múzeum in Budapest.
