The work comes from a luxurious, limited edition of the prestigious Parisian art quarterly “Byblis” (the “Winter 1923–1924” issue), which was published at the turn of 1923 and 1924. The renowned Parisian printer A. Jourde—an outstanding master of hand printing—was responsible for creating the color version of the woodcut, employing an advanced multicolor printing technique directly from the woodcut blocks.

Biography
He studied in Vienna and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczółkowski. In Paris, he studied sculpture under Antoine Bourdelle, and in Leipzig at the Academy of Graphic Arts (1912–13). He is recognized as the founder of modern Polish woodcut; he was also a master of watercolor. He exhibited alongside the Formists. He was a co-founder of the “Rytm” Association of Visual Artists. From 1922 to 1934, he headed the Department of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and from 1932 onward, he served as a professor there. In his work, he frequently drew on folk traditions, particularly those of the Podhale region. Oil paintings are extremely rare in this artist’s body of work.
