Damian Wojnowski is an artist born in Częstochowa (1972) who has been living and working in Gliwice, Silesia, for over 30 years. He is trained as a glass decorator, musician, and occupational therapist. For years, he has been consumed by his passion for painting and his love of drawing. On a daily basis, he conducts art therapy sessions with the elderly and people with intellectual disabilities. Through sculpture, painting, music, and singing, therapy participants gain access to their inner selves: their emotions, needs, and fears. In addition, he leads creative workshops for children, teenagers, and adults, unleashing their creativity and sparking a passion for creating. Since 2015, he has been a member of the Silesian Faun Art Association in Gliwice, where he successfully pursues his passion by participating in numerous group and solo exhibitions. A number of his works are held in private collections. Wojnowski collaborates with galleries in Gdynia, Warsaw, and Wrocław, and also participates in auctions of Polish contemporary art.
Damian Wojnowski’s paintings are a magical and often surprising journey between worlds, where—much like in an alchemist’s workshop—a pinch of fantasy and dreams intertwines with a reality that is not always idyllic. As the artist himself emphasizes, his works are an attempt to capture the mood of the moment, to freeze time for an instant, and to imbue ordinary activities and objects with an element of magic.
Drawing us into his vision of the world, Wojnowski treats us to subtle humor, often laced with reflection and contemplation. The artist possesses a keen ability to observe people, the relationships they form, their thoughts, character, and state of mind. At the same time, his paintings are exceptionally colorful.
“I create an imaginary world of my sensations and emotions. At times, I transport viewers to a fairy-tale-like, gentle reality, as when, in one painting, we see a little boy sitting and gazing into the distance. This ‘Little Prince’ may be dreaming of finding a unique being who could become his friend and give his life meaning. At other times, I take viewers into a surreal space where, unfortunately, machines that transport people through time, fortune-telling, playing cards, and crystal balls reign supreme. But I always leave the interpretation up to the viewers,” explains the artist.
