Biography
Henryk Zegadlo came from an artistic family - both his father, Adam, and brother, Eugeniusz, also carved in wood. From 1951 to 1953, Henryk Zegadło attended an art college, and then studied painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Professor Eugeniusz Eibisch. From 1960 to 1978 he ran an art atelier in Zakopane with his father, Adam. During this period he created paintings on glass and sacred sculptures inspired by folk art. He also created theatrical decorations, and his sculptures were regularly displayed at folk art exhibitions. The largest collection of his works is in the National Museum in Kielce. In 1978, the artist emigrated to Germany, where he settled permanently. After a trip to Japan in 1990, Zegadlo began creating sculptures inspired by Japanese folk art. A permanent exhibition of his work, known as the Zegadło Museum, opened in March 2001.
