Kajetonas Sklėrius (1876-1932) was one of the more prominent Lithuanian painters of the early 20th century, a member of the modern generation of Lithuanian art. Born in Naujamiestis (Panevėžys district), he studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he was introduced to the trends of modernising European art and the influence of Polish modernism. After returning to Lithuania, he took an active part in cultural life, teaching, belonging to Lithuanian artists' societies, participating in exhibitions and contributing to the formation of professional art traditions.
Sklėrijs' work combines the foundations of the realist school with features of Symbolism, Art Nouveau and early Modernism. He painted portraits, landscapes, religious paintings, and decorative compositions with a strong rhythm of lines, soft colouring, lyrical mood and interpretation of the spiritual state of mind. His works have a poetic atmosphere, a sensitive depiction of the inner world of man, and often a melancholy or a sense of the sacred. One of his most significant contributions was his stylised, decorative compositions, which combined folk art with modernist aesthetics.
The significance of Kajetonas Sklėrijs' work for Lithuanian art is associated with the consolidation of the transitional period, when art was moving away from academic realism towards more modern forms and ideas. His works helped to shape professional artistic taste, enriched the iconography of Lithuanian art, and encouraged a new approach to image stylisation and emotional expression. Although some of his works have not survived and his name has long been less well known, he is today regarded as an important participant in the early days of Lithuanian modernism, creating a subtle and distinctive artistic world that combines tradition, symbolism and aesthetic innovation.
